Blue Cave

Blue Cave Tour Croatia The Blue Cave is situated on the eastern side of the island of Biševo only 5 nautical miles from the town Komiža on the island of Vis. The small island of Biševo which has around ten permanent residents became famous in 1884 when the Blue Cave was discovered. It was first discovered by local divers as the natural entrance is below sea level. In 1884 an Austrian Baron Eugen von Ransonnet discovered the cave and built an artificial entrance by mining it. The great number of passengers that visit the Blue Cave every year use this entrance to this day. The natural entrance of the cave is spread below sea level such as a vault. When the sun is at its highest, its light penetrates through the opening which creates a dazzling blue colour in the interior or perhaps it would be better to say countless shades of blue. This is one of the first stops on the tour for an important reason - the interior is best illuminated in the morning hours when the sun is high and the sea is calm.

The island of Vis is situated quite far from the mainland at open sea. The strong sea waves that have been crashing its coast for centuries have created fascinating forms of the rocks and cliffs. The Stiniva cove used to be a cave and it still has that shape with its high unreachable rocky cliffs on both sides. The entrance to the cove is around 100m wide. Its unique location and pebble beach make it a popular location for visitors
